If you're on video calls all day, as many people are, it's important to consider what your work environment looks like to people on the other side of the call. People can't just see you, they can also see whatever is in the background within view of the camera. Having a mess or a lot of clutter, laundry thrown around, rusty pipes, this is all a reflection of you, and you certainly want to make sure the people your video calling with have the right impression.
Try this . . . Think of your work environment, and specifically whatever is in camera view, as a movie set. And we're not talking about a very wide field of view. It's a very narrow area. You want everything within view to be purposeful and in the right place. It doesn't have to look like an office, but it should look respectful and professional.
Consider adding conversation pieces, photos, something that's a reflection of you, such as your hobbies and interests, maybe some beachy items if you live near an ocean or lake. If you have an interesting collection, put that on display. Plants are always nice. A photo or painting on the wall behind you, maybe a lamp, some books. You get the idea.
Everything outside the camera's view can be as much of a mess as you would like. But your movie set should be planned to make you look like a seasoned professional.
